Introduction
Dear Readers,
We hope you enjoyed your summer and managed to find some time away.
We took the beginning of August for a team offsite near Salzburg, which doubled as our strategy day and a very welcome change of scenery. Mid-August, Markus and Jan spent three days in Frankfurt meeting clients, prospects, and partners. It was a busy trip but a good one - thanks to everyone who made time to meet in person.
The Q2 quarterly reviews have also kept us occupied throughout the month. Beyond the usual portfolio and performance discussions, we have been working through the ‘Notfallmappe’ - making sure families actually have their affairs documented and accessible.
All the best,
Jan & the Cape May team
A message by Jan Voss, author of this newsletter
The main purpose of this newsletter has always been to share insights relevant to affluent investors (and those looking to advance into that category), as well as the individuals out there that serve them. Based on the positive feedback that we frequently receive from our long-term readers, we seem to be on the right path - which makes me very happy.
However, longer-term readers might’ve also noticed a few differences, especially since earlier this year. That includes more frequent “calls to action” inviting you to reach out to us if a topic resonates with you particularly well, as well as this very (monthly) newsletter outlining more specifically on what the company behind this newsletter, Cape May Wealth Advisors, is working on with our clients in the prior month. Why that change? Because as late as December 2025, I’ve had long-term readers reach out to me to praise our writing while also asking what service we actually provide.
And as you can likely imagine, I’m not just writing this newsletter because of my (very real!) love for niche or less-niche topics in the world of finance. Cape May Wealth Weekly is our most important marketing channel, giving us the chance to reach affluent investors in Germany, Europe, and beyond - and allowing us to share every week how we support individuals in situations very similar to theirs. And of course, to generally help us build our brand - to great success. My colleagues and I continue to be humbled by the caliber of clients that we get to serve on a regular basis - ‘2024 Jan’ who started this newsletter would’ve never believed if I had told him who we get to work with today.
But as our team and business grows (more on that below - we are hiring, again), we also have to evolve a bit. I, but also our team (most notably, our analyst Svea), spend a lot of time every week working on this newsletter. We don’t want to change that, but as time becomes our most valuable commodity, we have to make sure to spend time on initiatives that can drive our business forward. Simply said, by making sure that this newsletter does not just advance our brand, but also (more directly) helps us reach new clients.
To be clear: Cape May Wealth Weekly as you know it will always be a free resource. I can promise you that. But in the future, you will continue to see those “calls to action”, and maybe, even the occasional outright offer to work with us. Ideally, said offer, of course, will entice you to become a client of ours, as many of our long-time readers already are. If they don’t, for example because you are a self-driven investor (as many of our readers are), I hope you will not be offended by them, but rather see them as a way that helps me ensure that the quality of this newsletter stays at that level you know, or ideally, becomes even better as we go. (In that regard, stay tuned for a soon-to-come additional newsletter by Cape May co-founder and in-house tax expert Tamara.)
With that in mind, allow me to highlight to you the profile of client(s) to which we think we can provide absolutely outstanding value, based on the many clients like this that we already work with:
Typically based in Germany or continental Europe
Entrepreneurial background, whether that means founding and selling a business and/or investing in an entrepreneurial and leading capacity (PE/VC)
Investable capital of 2 to 30 million euros
Looking for a holistic advisor and sparring partner who can not just help with the management of a liquid portfolio, but also all adjacent topics, ranging from your legal/tax structure, to strategic asset allocation, to illiquid investments and entrepreneurial projects like a new company
We typically support such clients with an initial and comprehensive wealth analysis (our Vermögenskonzept), in which we outline clear areas of improvement across structure, asset allocation, and other areas. Many of the affluent investors (and family offices) that we support with this task also have become long-term clients on the investing side - although that is not a firm requirement for us. It might sound like a cliché in our industry, but we really try to do what’s best for our clients.
If this profile sounds like you, and/or if you have a close friend or colleague in your network that you think could benefit from our services (or at least getting to know us!), we’d be very honored to hear from you.
Once again, thank you, dear reader, for giving us the chance to share our views on the world of investing every week. With that, on to our regularly scheduled programming.
What’s new with Cape May?

The first weekend of August, we headed to the mountains near Salzburg for our summer offsite. Friday was our strategy day, a chance to step away from the day-to-day and think about where we want to take Cape May over the next few years, and how to share more of our thinking through content. The rest of the weekend was considerably less structured. Great dinners with our families, a long discussion about White Lotus (who would've thought a hotel in Salzburg could make you feel like you're in Thailand?), a Saturday hike in perfect weather with well-earned Kaiserschmarrn and Apfelstrudel at the top, a swim in the lake for some Abkühlung, and a Sunday where we deliberately did very little.
We are also looking to grow the team. We are hiring a (Junior) Relationship Manager to help us serve our expanding client base. The role is supporting clients across their investment objectives and portfolio structure, liquid and illiquid investments, and wherever else their situation takes us, whether that’s a new venture, a direct investment, or a philanthropic project. We’re already in advanced discussions with a few candidates, but if you are interested or know someone who might be a good fit, reach out with your CV.
How we served our clients this month
A few highlights from the last weeks:
Hosted a workshop for a client that is exploring the set up of a potential single- or multi-family office, working through various approaches, investment objectives, operational questions (such as implicit and explicit costs of a family offices), and paths of implementation for the client specifically
Analyzed a client’s fund portfolio to help decide the commitment amount for two planned fund investments, as well as outlining how different annual commitment amounts drive the client’s overall asset allocation going forward
Supported an entrepreneur with a holistic review of their portfolio, taking into account liquidity requirements around an expected larger investment, optimization around how they receive ongoing income from their holding company, as well as “quick wins” in terms of portfolio diversification
Reviewed asset allocation proposals of a family office client, providing them with unbiased feedback as well as an aggregated overview of those asset allocation proposals and their impact on the family office’s investment strategy
Introduced a client to multiple potential co-investors for a private equity transaction that they are structuring, resulting in discussions around seven- to eight-figure investments into said client’s SPV
Reviewed a client’s excel model analyzing different options around a private real estate purchase for their parents, providing them multiple paths forward under consideration of commercial and tax-related implications
Designed a comprehensive model for a client to outline differences between a US single-stock mandate and the ETF-based alternative, taking into account factors such as tracking error, higher costs of a managed account, differences in capital gains tax and withholding tax, to provide them with a clear outline of the cases in which a single-stock strategy actually warrants the higher complexity and risk
Managed a client’s RFP process with two banks under consideration of their specific income requirements, risk tolerance, as well as jurisdiction-specific tax considerations, resulting in a satisfactory starting asset allocation providing sufficient chance for returns without incurring outsized drawdown risks
As always, if any of the above resonates with your situation, don't hesitate to reach out.

Cape May Wealth Weekly
In August, we tried to take a little break from writing ourselves - and instead offered our audience an insight into the writing of a few guest authors that we greatly appreciate.
In The Catalogue and the Cash Flow, our analyst Svea looked at music royalties as an asset class - from the difference between master rights and publishing rights, to how institutional capital now accesses the market through catalogue funds, asset backed securities, and royalty backed notes.
In What To Think About When Pitching A Family Office, our guest Benedikt Langer of Embracing Emergence shared his experience from standing up a Texas-based family office and backing emerging managers in VC. His core argument: family offices are not simply underwriting a fund, they are underwriting you as a person, and trust in your intentions needs to be established before your competence even registers.
In The Best Ways to Protect Your Portfolio Against an AI Bubble Burst, our guest David Höhl of Simple Alpha, a former partner at Interface Capital who has been investing in stocks since the age of 14, made the case that we are probably still in the early innings of a forming AI bubble, and outlined four ways investors can hedge without missing the rally: gold, high-quality software companies, Bitcoin, and Berkshire Hathaway.
In Don't ask for active management – ask for true alignment, differentiated ideas, and agility, our guest Swen Lorenz, author of Undervalued-Shares.com and CEO of Sarnia Asset Management, made the case that the question investors should be asking is not whether to go active, but how to identify the rare managers who actually have a shot at generating alpha - by looking for genuine skin in the game, differentiated and under-researched ideas, and funds small enough to stay agile. (We’re hosting a dinner in Berlin with Swen on Tuesday, September 8 - I look forward to seeing a few of our readers there as well. As of now we are fully booked, but if you’re interested, send us a message in case a slot frees up.)
And as always, if there's something you'd like us to dig into that we haven't covered yet, we'd love to hear it.
Final Remarks (and Asks)
We are excited to be back with new articles and ideas in the coming weeks after the summer break. If you'd like to be included in one of our upcoming events in Berlin, just reach out. Besides the event with Swen, we plan to have an event together with a hedge fund / credit manager that our co-founder Markus (and many of our family office peers) greatly respects - if that sounds intriguing to you, shoot us a message.
Thanks for reading!
